The Hallicrafters SX-100 is my favorite vintage set. Built in large numbers, $150 to $300 will buy an operating receiver, depending on condition. A matching speaker in nice condition can go for almost $100, but is well worth the money because of its attractive appearance and room filling high fidelity capability. A little careful shopping can put you in an SX-100 and R46 speaker for less than $250, and with it, you can experience vacuum tube short wave reception that rivals the best of them.
The SX-100 is a double conversion super heterodyne receiver of mid-50’s vintage. The receiver does a very nice job of receiving commercial AM and amateur, military and commercial single sideband signals. The receiver has selectivity bandwidths of several varying steps from 500 to 5000 Hz to enable the operator to pick a weak Morse code signal from a noisy band (500 Hz) or listen to the BBC in virtual high fidelity (5000 Hz, but in practice wider than that).
If I could have only one old radio, this would be it. The chrome, the lights, and that ginormous signal strength meter located in the front of the panel just screams cool.
