What’s up with the turtle?

A fast growing facet of amateur radio these days is HF Pack.  HF Packers operate portable, battery powered amateur radio equipment from unlikely spots, often carrying their equipment in backpacks and operating on the move.  Strolling along the beach with a whip antenna and a back pack draws some curious looks, more so after 9/11, but HF Pack-style operations prepare operator and equipment for disaster and public service communications, situations in which amateur radio often provides the only operational communication networks for hours or days after hurricanes, tsunamis or man-made disasters.

This card, plagiarized a bit from another Cayman tourist symbol, commemorates March 2005 HF Pack operation from Grand Cayman during the CQ World-Wide WPX Radio Contest, where almost 40 countries were contacted in about five hours of portable operation from Seven Mile Beach.
